Whether you prefer the relaxed and undone look or the chic and sophisticated boutique hotel aesthetic, most interior stylists agree its the scatter cushions that elevate that final look from superb to superior! But just how do you style your scatter cushions to get that instagramable look you’re looking for.

Number and Size of Cushions:

The number and size of cushions you need will depend on the size of your bed. Eleanor Maylin, Founder of The Couture Cushion Ltd, reveals the recommended number of cushions to ensure your bed looks like it's been dressed like a pro.

Single bed: Two large square 18” cushions and one small bolster or rectangle 12” x 22” cushion

How to arrange: 'I recommend placing the two large upright cushions sitting against the flat base pillows and then adding your smaller rectangular cushion in front.'

Double bed: Three large square 18” cushions and three smaller 16” cushions

How to arrange: 'On a standard UK double bed (see here for US sizing), as well as your pillows, aim for three large square cushions at the back and layer up with two smaller square cushions. You can then add another small square cushion at the front of the arrangement.'

King-size bed: Three large square 20” cushions, two smaller 18” square cushions, One small 16” cushion. You can swap out the 16” square cushion for a small 12” x 22”rectangle cushions or one bolster cushion

How to arrange: 'For a king-size bed, place three large 20” cushions at the rear, then position your two smaller square 18” cushions in front, which sit behind the small 16” cushion at the front. Again, if you prefer, you can swap out the 16” cushion at the front for a 12” x 22” rectangular cushion or a bolster.

Super King-size bed: Three large 22” cushions, two large 20” cushions, one large 18” cushion.

How to arrange: ''For a Super king-size bed, place three large 22” cushions at the rear, then position your two large 20” cushions in front, which sit behind the single 18” cushion at the front. Again, if you prefer, you can swap out the 18” cushion at the front for a 12” x 22” rectangular cushion or a bolster.

Remember, these are just guidelines. You can adjust the number and size based on your personal preference.

Color Schemes and Interior Styles:

  • Monochromatic: For a minimalist look, choose cushions in the same colour or shade. Black, greys, neutrals and whites all work in this way
  • Complementary: Create a bold statement by pairing colours that are opposite on the colour wheel, such as blue and orange.
  • Analogous: For a harmonious feel, use colours that are adjacent on the colour wheel, like blue, green, and yellow.

Consider your personality and overall interior style when choosing colours:

  • Modern: Opt for clean lines, geometric patterns, and neutral colours.
  • Bohemian: Embrace more bold, vibrant colours, eclectic patterns, and beautiful textures.
  • Scandinavian: Stick to a minimalist aesthetic with light colours and natural fabrics.
  • Vintage: Incorporate retro patterns, rich colours, and luxurious fabrics.

Tips for Styling Your Scatter Cushions:

  • Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to combine different textures, patterns, and sizes.
  • Create a Focal Point: Place your feature cushion or your most colourful cushion at the centre of your bed at the front of your cushion set arrangement.
  • Layer Your Cushions: Stack the smaller cushions in front of larger ones for added depth and dimension.
  • Consider the Season: Swap out heavier, thicker fabrics like wool or heavy cotton for lighter, cooler linens in the summer.
  • Add a Throw, Blanket or Bed Runner: A throw, blanket or bed runner can complete the look and provide extra warmth.
  • Have Fun! Experiment with different arrangements and don't be afraid to try something new, it’s your home and it needs to reflect your individual style.

By following these tips, you can create a beautiful and inviting bed that reflects your personal style. Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and experiment until you find an arrangement that you absolutely love.
